Chapter 10

It was hours later and dark in the room when a strange sound woke up Lexie. She was laying half on Jonik as he lightly snored next to her. I must be dreaming, she thought as she put her head back down. She was tired and sore from all Jonik’s lovemaking and all she wanted now was to sleep. But, just as she was drifting off the sound of something cracking caused her eyes to pop open. She sat up in the bed and strained her eyes to look around the dark room. Next to her, Jonik stirred and also sat up.

“What’s wrong, my love?” His voice was husky with sleep.

“I don’t know. I keep hearing something,” she said.

He rubbed her bare back. “It’s probably just someone out in the corridor making noise. Come, lay back down and sleep.” His hand pulled on her elbow to get her to lie back but at the same time the cracking noise sounded across the room.

“There! Did you hear that?” She turned to look at Jonik in the dark.

“Yes, I did,” he said then threw back the covers and got out of the bed. He flipped on the main light for the room and looked towards the small table where her dragon egg sat.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Neither one moved as they watched the egg rock slightly. Jonik looked back at her and smiled then held out his hand to her.

“Your dragon is hatching,” he whispered as if the sound of his voice would somehow distract the baby dragon from entering the universe.

Lexie forgot she was naked as she raced out of the bed wide awake now. She took Jonik’s hand and they walked over to the table as a couple. He pulled out one of the chairs for her to sit and watch as the egg cracked again.

Lexie was excited beyond belief! The small baby dragon she had seen when she had shared the inside of the egg not long ago was now going to show its self to Jonik for the first time. This was her dragon! This baby had chosen to stay with her and bond with her. The honor of such a gift was overwhelming for her. So much had happened to her over the course of her life, but this added happiness to her life. Just hours ago Jonik had made her his mate finally after waiting for months to claim her. Was it a coincidence that the egg was hatching that they were now bonded together?

She stared in fascination at the blue and white egg as it splintered here and there as the dragon inside pushed to get out. A small fragment of the outer shell cracked enough to fall off and land on the table top. Lexie stretched one finger out to drag the partial egg shell to her. It felt no different than a chicken’s egg back on Earth.

A fine sheen of membrane still separated the outside world from the tiny movement inside. The light in the room was more than adequate to see through the membrane and spot the infant.
